Indorama urges Nigeria to liberalize phosphate imports for affordable fertilizers

Indorama Eleme Fertilizer and Chemicals Limited have called on the Nigerian Government to liberalize phosphate importation, currently managed by a single government agency, to allow reputable industry players to participate.

This move, according to Indorama’s CEO, Mr. Munish Jindal, would lower fertilizer costs for Nigerian farmers. Jindal made this appeal during an oversight visit by the Senate Committee on Downstream Petroleum Sector on August 26, 2025.

He emphasized that Indorama’s two fertilizer plants supply high-quality, affordable urea, making fertilizers from its plants some of the cheapest available to farmers.

Senator Suleiman Kawu Sumaila, the Committee Chairman, accompanied by 11 members, commended Indorama’s production facilities for their role in positioning Nigeria as a self-sufficient fertilizer producer and exporter. Sumaila highlighted the plants’ contributions to farmers, food security, and the national economy, noting that affordable urea fertilizers have increased crop yields by up to 50%. This has significantly advanced Nigeria’s agricultural self-reliance and food security goals.

The committee’s visit underscored Indorama’s critical role in driving Nigeria’s agricultural and economic progress, reinforcing its status as a game-changer in the nation’s fertilizer industry.
